UpliftUplift, addresses the quality of life of cancer patients—identifying opportunities that cultivate joy and happiness, and strengthening the support group around the patient. Based on his hypothesis that through design, joy and humor can positively change most experiences, Berk investigated how design could touch people at an emotional level, especially in situations where they feel most vulnerable.
Wash-itWash-it is a sustainable washing unit concept which integrates the showering and clothes-washing activities in order to filter and reuse the water. Therefore, Wash-it enables users to wash their clothing while showering. Every time the users take a shower, they will have an opportunity to wash their clothing without using any extra water.
Spiro-PlusSpiro-Plus is a pulmonary function testing device that provides patients with interactive feedback. By using "candle" metaphor, Spiro-Plus aims to motivate patients and reduce stress factor in order to increase test efficiency in hospitals.
RopoRopo is a self-balancing dustpan and broom duo that will never fall over. A lightweight water tank in the bottom compartment of the dustpan allows Ropo to stay balanced. After sweeping, the user can snap the broom and the dustpan together and put it away as a single unit. The rocking weeble wobble feature adds fun to the task of cleaning.
GözIt’s wet, hard, and slippery. The door is locked, and there’s no smartphone to call for help. We spend a portion of our day in this space alone. It’s called a “bathroom.” Göz is a family of smart home-monitoring devices aimed at making the bathroom a safer place.
Desert to DessertAlthough the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations proposes insect consumption as our future sustainable source of nutrients, the biggest challenge of insect consumption by those not accustomed is overcoming the “yuck factor.” Berk Ilhan and Jung Soo Park approached the challenge from a visual and experiential lens—exploring through form and ritual the ennobling of insects as a unique and exclusive food offering.
CraterInspired by the self-adapting quality of the nature, Crater is a family of bathroom products that consists of magnetic tiles and metal accessories. Thanks to the magnetic connection, accessories fit easily on the tiles without requiring any drilling work. Besides, easy attachment and detachment allow users to rearrange the accessories conveniently.
ExcuseMeExcuseMe is an app that encourages people to say “no” to others and “yes” to themselves. In order to amplify the free time, the app hides other events on users’ “ExcuseMe” calendars and makes the free time slots more visible. Also built into the app are incentives for committing to free time. At the end of every month, users accumulate points for every personal task they commit to.
Non Voting BoothWith the goal of finding out why young people don’t vote, SVA MFA Products of Design, class of 2015 created a campaign and design intervention called “I Don’t Vote”—addressing apathy and framing the discussion around both the predicted and unseen reasons for opting out. The campaign was grounded in an I Don’t Vote Manifesto, and in an online website and mobile web-app, an in-person booth, sticker, and button campaign.
FloraFlora is a modular system providing Internet access, which allows visitors of fair and exhibition halls to work individually or as a couple in a motivating way. for both pair and individual users in fairs, airports, congress, exhibitions. FLORA is designed to bring fresh, natural, motivating feelings to working spaces. It provides an ergonomic and effective pair-work experience and private space for solo workers.
Hop to LifeHop To Life is an intervention that promotes increase in activity through the use of a smart phone game. This game is target at a younger generation but can be played by people of all ages. The idea is to familiarize people with healthy behaviors in a way that is fun and entertaining.
Food x LoveFood x Love (Food with Love) is a service design concept by Berk Ilhan that connects the loved ones who live in different cities by enabling them to send the food that they cooked for each other. The movie was shot and edited by Berk Ilhan and Lusha Huang as a part of Micheal Chung's Video Storytelling class at School of Visual Arts, MFA Products of Design program.
